Stay In The Moment
The home stretch of the season. Summer is just around the corner and with it come thoughts of college, vacation plans, and girls by the pool. It is easy to get distracted, especially for those that have more years of lacrosse ahead of them.
My ask is this: don’t take a moment for granted. Lacrosse is a short season and careers fly by in a blink. Remember the conditioning you did in the winter. The wall ball sessions in the fall. Remember how much you looked forward to this season the moment last season ended. Stay present. Stay present with this group of guys, these coaches, in this particular time of your life.
There will be more summers, more vacations, and, perhaps too many, more club tournaments. Believe it or not (and trust me, I would have called you crazy when I was 17), you will miss the practices with your best friends, while the speaker blasts and the Carolina sun starts to set over the trees. Take a second to look around– notice the sounds of an active lacrosse practice, notice the greenery around the field, and even the smell of sweat from the practice jersey you told your mom you washed, but never did.
You will miss the sweaty car rides home, replaying the goal you scored in practice (even if it was only in warm ups), while hoping the car ahead of you would go just 5mph faster to get you home for a well deserved meal.
Soak it up. Nothing but conference games on the schedule and the optimism of a potential play off run, there is nothing better.
Today is an incredible opportunity to create the stories that you will tell for the rest of your life.
Thought of the Week
This is a game that rewards creativity. Don’t make getting on the wall a chore. Throw in some AirPods and your favorite playlist. Throw behind the back passes and imagine you're doing it on Memorial Day weekend for all the marbles. Practice the things you hope to one day take to practice, and into the game. Imagine yourself celebrating in front of your family and friends.
Attitude is everything and getting better is only a chore if you allow yourself to see it that way.
